Savage and Serene
“Our life is March weather, savage and serene in one hour.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Not long ago, while driving through my neighborhood -- I passed a house I must have passed hundreds of times, yet never noticed the trampoline in the front yard. I noticed it then because a young girl, with bouncy black curls, was bouncing up and down, grinning from ear to ear, waving at traffic passing by - IN THE POURING RAIN.
That juxtaposition of a grey, rainy, cool day being the moment this young girl decided to jump up and down joyously stuck with me. I smile even now as I picture her in my head.
Opposing actions are a common theme in life. Laughter through tears. Joy amid pain.
Opposing actions are a theme in yoga asana practice as well. Root to rise. Engage to release.
Fully embracing the savage and serene in life remains a challenge. Yet I encourage you to look for the moments that present opposing actions. The sad ache of missing a loved one, followed by the happy memory that brings a smile.
Without darkness, there'd be no light.
